miwa released two self-published independent singles, "Song for You/Today" and "Soba ni Itai Kara" in 2007 and 2008. She subsequently signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan. In 2010 she released her debut single "Don't Cry Anymore". The single was in top 20 on Oricon's single charts.
miwa released her first album Guitarissimo on April 6, 2011 which charted #1 in the Oricon's album charts, making miwa the first Heisei period-born solo singer to reach a No. 1 on the album charts in the history of the Oricon.
Lot of songs her were chosen for either Opening/Ending for Anime and TV shows. miwa also used to be a DJ for a Japanese monthly radio show. She played a flautist in the film Maestro!. She is also a versatile live performer.
miwa liked Western musicians such as Sheryl Crow, Deep Purple, Carole King, Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift. Her favorite Japanese musicians are Aiko, Angela Aki, Radwimps and Yuki.
Musically miwa follows Rock, Dance/Electronic Pop Genres. He music is a joy to listen to as she often keeps alternating between Happy, Foot Tapping energetic songs, to Mellow smooth folk ballads, Classic and Typical JPop songs providing a lot of variety. She has a low to mid voice and does some high notes as well, kind of cute and child like at times which is typical of female Japanese singers.
miwa's most commercially successful song is "Hikari e" (2012) which has over 1 million downloads. Definitely her best song and my personal favorite. Some of other best songs by miwa are 360 Degrees | Again Again | B O Y | Bokurano Mirai | Chasing Hearts | Cotton No Kisetsu | Delight | Friday-Ma-Magic | Colorful | Drive Song | Kimi ni Deaetakara | Merry-Go-Round | Miracle | Reboot | Shiny | Sobani Itaikara | Yui
In July 2018, miwa released her second compilation album titled "miwa THE BEST". The album is a two disc set (Audio + Blu-ray) having her major singles, starting with "Don’t Cry Anymore" and concluding with the single Update.
