VCHA are Girls of the Year

Presenting the new Global POP Girls of the Year - VCHA... formed through A2K, a 2023 American reality competition show. The 6 member girl group is made of Camila, Lexus, KG, Kendall, Savanna, and Kaylee from US and Canada. Lexi is the leader of the group.

The members has lit up the year (2024) with a brilliant pop Debut Single Release called Girls of the Year. It was released on  January 26, 2024. It's an absolutely fabulous song, with excelling singing by the members, great lyrics and composition, with superb choreography making it a complete package. This is one girl group that you can rely on to do well if they stick together and with JYP at the helm I would like them become global icons like TWICE.

The release of their debut single, “Girls of the Year,” and its second track (B-Side), “XO Call Me” showcases how the girls — Camila, 18, Lexi, 18, Kendall, 17, Savanna, 17, KG, 16, and Kaylee, 14 — embrace their new lives in the practice room and on stage with stunning confidence and synchronization.

This following VCHA's pre-debut with the single album SeVit (NEW LIGHT), contained three songs featured on the two-part A2K finale: “Y.O.Universe,” “Go Getter,” and “Know Me Like That.” “Y.O.Universe” music video was released along with the single, at on September 22, 2023.

On December 1, 2023, VCHA released another pre-debut song, “Ready for the World,” with a performance video. “Ready for the World” is the full version song of the A2K theme song, with new vocals for by the six VCHA members.

The 2nd single titled "Only Me" was released on March 15, 2024. Comprising the title track "Only One" and the B-side track "Favorite Girl," VCHA's second single album sees collaboration with renowned creators like Space Primates and Tiffany Gia, is a testament to their evolving sound and artistic versatility.

Full Background and key highlights of A2K:

The A2K Series was created by J.Y. Park and the CEO of Republic Records, Monte Lipman and they made an official announcement in a virtual press video released on JYP Entertainment's YouTube channel.

The 2023 American reality competition show/series is a joint project between JYP Entertainment and Republic Records aimed at creating the first American girl group using the K-pop system, aimed at a global audience. JYP founder JY Park picks members for an American girl group from the United States and Canada. Audition were held in 2022 in 5 cities - Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, Dallas and Los Angeles for girls born between January 1, 2005, and September 1, 2010.

A total of 11 contestents were shortlisted for the Boot Camp in LA to make the final list of member who would travel to JYP HQ in Seoul South Korea for final training. Camila, Lexus, KG, Kendall, Savanna, Kaylee, Cristina, Gina, Mischa, Melissa, Yuna made it to the boot camp.

At the boot camp the contestants were put through different stages like Dance Evaluation, Show Your Passion, Vocal Evaluation, Star Quality Evaluation, Character Evaluation with ranking awarded to each contestants at end of each stage receiving gemstones from JYP, finally culminating with the Showcase Performances and final overall ranking by JYP and his staff. Nichkhun from 2PM was also a special judge. Camilla, Gina and Cristina ranked top 3. Unfortunately, Mischa didn't make the cut to go to Korea. Though Melissa was selected to go to Korea, she withdrew due to personal reasons. So, the 9 contestants who would go to Korea were - Camila, Lexus, KG, Kendall, Savanna, Kaylee, Cristina, Gina and Yuna.

At JYP HQ in Seoul South Korea, further stages included Individual Performances, Team Evaluation and respective rankings were awarded, with a The Grand Finale Performance and final line-up revealed by JYP. Preliminary stage performance was by Team Marteami: Kendall, Lexus, Yuna ; Back Dawgz: Camila, Gina, Cristina ; SP3KTRUM: KG, Kaylee, Savanna. Yuna was eliminated in evaluation stage. For the Grand Finale, the contestants were divided into 2 groups of 4 and pitted against each other. No, one know how many members will be chosen for the final line-up of the girl group so that was still an intriguing mystery whatever the final outcome of the Grand Finale might be.

Group 1 - TOPIC had Lexus, Camila, Savanna, Gina and Group 2 - Clover had KG, Keylee, Kendall, Cristina for the Grand Finale Performance with Group 1 taking the top honors. In a twist, a final evaluation was also awarded for Attitude after the final performance to spice things up.

During the whole selection process contestants perform material from JYP and Republic Records of few popular artists/groups and others including Whitney Houston, J.Y. Park, Adele, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, TWICE, ITZY, Wonder Girls, Stray Kids, NMIXX, Nayeon, Sunmi,  and more. They also performed few brand new songs which were made for the competition.

Results and VCHA Line-up:

Lexus became the first member topping the overall selection process. KG bagged 2nd spot while previous top contestant Camilla slipped to 3rd. Savanna bagged 4th spot followed by Kendall and Kaylee (who was just 12 years old) to roundup the 6 member line-up. Obvious shock was the elimination of Gina, who had previously trained at JYP HQ for 11 months. Cristina slipped to the bottom after a strong start before the Korean leg and was eliminated as well.

Personally, I liked all members who competed but in my opinion Gina should have been included in the line-up and conidering Kaylee's tender age of 12 at debut, she could have been taken in as a Trainee at JYP and used for a future JYP group given she is fluent in Korean. But, that is that I guess.

J.Y. Park made the big reveal of the new American K-pop girl group: VCHA (pronounced “V-cha”), which is Korean word for shining or illuminating. VCHA would go on to release its predebut single, “SeVit (NEW LIGHT)” on September 22, 2023 featuring 3 new songs.

The whole series comprised 22 episodes was broadcast exclusively on JYP Entertainment's YouTube channel from July 13, 2023.
